Illegal wildlife trafficking is a multi-billion dollar industry driven primarily by demand from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) across Asia. One major form of TCM is 泡酒 (paojiu) - herbs and animals steeped in high-proof rice wine that is either consumed or applied externally. We propose to develop the methodology to sequence DNA directly from alcohol for identification of endangered animals being used in this growing trade.
